OBD2 Code P0401 Citroen definition: EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. It is part of the vehicle emmissions system, and is used to reduce combustion temperature and pressure to control Oxides of Nitrogen. There are generally three parts to the EGR system: the EGR valve, an actuator solenoid, and a differential pressure sensor EGR (DPFE).
Symptoms of turbo issues include excessive exhaust smoke, lack of power, and strange engine noises. Excessive Exhaust Smoke. If you notice that your Citroen Berlingo 1.6 HDi is emitting excessive amounts of smoke, this could be a sign that your turbo is malfunctioning. The smoke could be black, gray, or blue, depending on the cause of the problem.
Powertrains include petrol and diesel engines. Petrol engine options for the latest version were limited to a single turbocharged 1.2 L Puretech inline-3. Diesel options consisted of either a 1.5 L BlueHDI inline-4 or a 1.6 L HDi inline-4. The larger diesel engine was also sold as the BlueHDi.
Regarding code readers the OBD standard is misleading, I was looking at generic OBD2 units but read so many reports of them not working on older citroens. In the end I bought the Sealey VS863 for Citroen, Renault and Peugeot and it works on my 04 plate Berlingo 2.0 Hdi and 04 plate Citroen C3 and an 02 plate Renault Clio.

Engine Tapping Noises. I have 2009 Berlingo 1.6 hdi 110 with 66,000 miles, always maintained and never driven hard. The Friday before Christmas I noticed a light hollow tapping noise coming from the engine, I thought it was a noisy tappet but it got worse and louder, like all sixteen tappets are loose, a couple of times I heard a screeching
Slackened the two bolts securing EGR valve and eased valve away from head enough to insert plate. cratch: Then removed three bolts securing the fuel filter mounting casting (blanking plate won't go in with it in place!). Inserted plate next to head and retightened EGR valve. Refitted fuel filter bracket and filter.
